Generic gate instruction (GPI)
Since 1 April 2019, the Generic Gate Instruction (Generieke Poortinstructie) has been mandatory on all construction sites. The certification was introduced to promote safe behaviour on site. What is it, which variants are there and how do you get a GPI certificate? Read all about it here.
What is the generic gate instruction?
The Generic Gate Instruction (GPI) is a safety instruction that is mandatory for anyone who wants access to a construction site or industrial site in the Netherlands.
The GPI was developed to ensure safety on industrial sites and factory premises and to prevent accidents and incidents. The GPI contains important safety information and rules that apply to the sites in question, such as risks, safety measures, emergency procedures and codes of conduct.
Anyone who wants access to the site has to complete the GPI training and get a GPI certificate. This applies not just to the subcontractor's staff, but also to drivers and visitors who want to enter the site, for example. This keeps the site safe and reduces the risk of incidents and accidents.
GPI doesn't replace VCA
GPI focuses specifically on the safety rules and procedures that apply to particular locations, while VCA covers general safety rules and procedures for high-risk environments. You still need both to work on construction sites.
Which Generic Gate Instruction certificates are there?
There are several Generic Gate Instruction (GPI) certificates you can get, depending on the type of work and the specific risks on the industrial site or factory premises in question. The most common GPI certificates for construction and installation technology are:
GPI Infra
This variant of the GPI is meant for contractors and subcontractors working in infrastructure, such as building roads, bridges, tunnels and other infrastructure projects.
GPI B&U
This variant of the GPI was developed specifically for contractors and subcontractors working in building and non-residential construction, such as building homes, offices, schools, hospitals and other non-residential buildings.
GPI Installation
This variant of the GPI is meant for contractors and subcontractors working in the installation sector, such as installing electrical systems, heating and ventilation systems, security systems and other installation projects.
Each GPI variant contains specific safety information and rules that apply to that sector. By taking the right GPI variant and getting the matching certificate, contractors and subcontractors gain the knowledge and skills they need to work safely in their sector and on the sites in question. Other GPI certificates are available for Petrochemicals and for Ports.
How long is a GPI certificate valid?
A GPI certificate is valid for 1 year. That way you stay up to date with the latest changes to safety rules and procedures. Make sure you renew your certificate on time so you keep your access to the site.
How do you get a GPI certificate?
You can easily get a GPI certificate online. It all runs in your browser, so you don't need to install any extra software. You can also choose from several languages for the training. It consists of an introduction video, practice questions and test questions. You get 30 minutes to complete the test. Once you've passed the GPI, you get your certificate straight away.
Getting a certificate costs €8.75. You then get a login code that lets you take the test 3 times. If you still haven't passed after that, you'll need to buy a new code.
