Becoming a plumber without qualifications?

It's quite a challenge, but it's not impossible. The plumbing trade has changed a lot in recent years. A lot more technology has come in, with systems like heat pumps, heat recovery systems and modern boilers. That makes the trade challenging and in high demand. There'll be plenty of work in the future too for plumbers.

Without training you miss out on a lot of knowledge

If you do a course in installation engineering, it takes a few years. That's what it takes to learn all the techniques and systems. Without training, you lack the essential knowledge you need to become a good plumber.

Are there plumbers without qualifications?

Yes, there are plumbers who got into the trade by building up experience and ended up working as a plumber that way. But to work with all the systems, you need to get extra certificates. You can get these through the company you work for.

Your options as a plumber without qualifications

You haven't completed a course in installation engineering, but you do want to work as a plumber. So what can you do?

Gain experience as a plumber

No qualifications but plenty of experience? Then you may still be able to work as a plumber. Installation companies are short of good plumbers, and lots of them will be retiring in the coming years. That opens up places for plumber's mates and apprentice plumbers. To be in the running, it helps if you've done some DIY at home or for people around you that's relevant to plumbing. Think adjusting pipework and fitting bathroom suites. Once you've done that, see if there's an installation company that'll let you shadow them, on Saturdays for example. If they agree and see that you've got talent and drive, they may well give you a chance as an apprentice plumber down the line.
