No diploma? No problem! You learn the tricks of the trade and earn money at the same time. Then you move up, become a skilled tradesperson and later maybe even a site manager running an entire project. In this blog we tell you what that growth looks like, what you can expect and how you can build your way to the top. Read on?<\/p>\n<h2> <\/h2>\n<h2>Apprentice to Site Manager<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Apprentice in Construction (0-3 years) <\/strong>You can start in construction as an apprentice, either without any prior training or by doing a hands-on vocational course such as carpenter, bricklayer, plumber, etc., which usually takes 2 to 3 years. You can choose between a <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/BBL\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BBL programme<\/a> (work and learn) or a BOL programme where you study for a role. During your apprenticeship you earn an average of \u20ac2,610 gross per month, depending on where you work and your type of employment.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Experienced Tradesperson (3-5 years) <\/strong>Once you've finished your vocational training, you get the chance to work as a skilled tradesperson. You can also gain experience in construction without a qualification and develop your skills on the job. With about 5 years of experience you can expect a higher salary, and you can choose to stay in employment or, for example, start out as a self-employed freelancer (ZZP).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Specialist Tradesperson (5+ years) <\/strong>As your experience grows, you can specialise in a specific field within construction, such as restoration, new build or renovation. You also earn more as a specialist tradesperson and may take on management responsibilities. Salaries for a specialist tradesperson vary by role and type of employment, but on average it's between \u20ac2,595 and \u20ac3,510 gross per month.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Foreman (7+ years<\/strong><strong>) <\/strong>After about 7 years of experience you can consider the role of foreman. As a foreman you lead a team of tradespeople and you're responsible for coordinating projects.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Site Manager (10+ years)<\/strong>Voil\u00e0! Finally, as an experienced foreman you can work towards the role of site manager in construction. Site managers have a leadership role and are responsible for the entire building process on a project. This role requires extensive experience and knowledge of building processes and project management. In this role you earn an average of \u20ac4,215 gross per month<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Benefits<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>As a construction worker you enjoy various benefits that make this step attractive<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Good pay: Construction offers good terms of employment, for skilled workers too, and there are often chances for overtime and extra financial bonuses.<\/li>\n<li>Job security: You don't need to worry about ending up without work, there are tens of thousands of vacancies open.<\/li>\n<li>Variety: It gives you the chance to work on different projects.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What do I need to be able to do?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>You often start early on site, so being able to get up early is a must.<\/li>\n<li>You need to be able to lift a lot, think heavy tools or ladders.<\/li>\n<li>You don't give up easily. Sometimes things take longer than expected, so perseverance is important.<\/li>\n<li>You need to be a good reader, think interpreting blueprints, client instructions and other documents.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4> <\/h4>\n<h4>The best-known jobs in construction <\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>A <strong>Formwork carpenter<\/strong> specialises in making formwork from wood or metal. This formwork, or these moulds, are used to pour concrete into. This allows specific structures and building foundations to be formed. Think elements like walls, beams, floors and lift shafts. In the end, these structures form the backbone of a home or other building. When you look around a city, you only really realise how much concrete has gone into our world. Think fitting window frames or hanging doors. Whether it's putting up a partition wall or a ceiling, it's all in a day's work for you. You work on new homes, commercial premises and renovation projects too. Sometimes you're working indoors and other times outdoors. Sometimes you work solo, but you can also team up with colleagues on a bigger project. In your role as a carpenter you often prepare things for painters or bricklayers. There are various roles within carpentry you can take on. Maybe you want to specialise as a concrete carpenter, restoration carpenter or furniture maker.
